Shopian, Apr 29 (KNO): Residents of Darbagh village in Shopian’s Zainpora have demanded potable water supply in their area with several residents yet to get piped water connection.
The residents of the area told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the area has been facing a water crisis for a long time now but no steps are being taken in this regard.
The residents of new colony Darbagh said that since years the residents of the area have been facing inconvenience due to unavailability of potable water in the area.
They said that this area is around 25 kilometres from main town Shopian and they have to travel long distances to fetch water.
Imtiyaz Ahmad, a local, said that the residents of the area continue to consume contaminated water for years as they don't have access to potable water yet.
He said that during wet weather, they have been facing more inconvenience as it isn't easy to travel for long distances during inclement weather conditions.
Farooq Ahmad another local said that due to the consumption of unsafe water, the threat of water-borne diseases looms large over the area
He said that they were assured by the authorities several times but on ground nothing has been done.
Locals said that they have brought this issue in notice of higher ups several times but to no avail.
They requested higher ups to look into the matter at the earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief.
An official of the concerned department said that area is being covered under Jal Jeevan Mission and residents will get potable water soon.
He said that a 1.5 inch pipe has been laid there but that isn't enough to cater to all households.
He assured that a main pipeline is being laid in the area after which people won't face any problems while a filtration plant will be started soon there—(KNO)
